British GP 2026: FIA blamed software error

News - 2026-07-08 - By Jenny Marsh

Autosport, Motorsport.com and RaceFans reported the FIA blamed a software error for Silverstone’s safety-car finish after a late restart reversal.

Autosport, Motorsport.com and RaceFans reported that the FIA blamed a software error for the controversial safety-car finish to the 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Those outlets said the safety car was initially called in for a final-lap restart before that move was reversed, leaving the race to finish under caution.

Autosport and Motorsport.com reported the late neutralisation followed Max Verstappen’s crash at Stowe with six laps remaining. They also said the finish drew boos from the Silverstone crowd after the restart confusion, while RaceFans reported the FIA said the decision not to restart was in line with the regulations.

Motorsport.com also reported criticism from several former Formula 1 figures. It said David Coulthard urged the FIA to place more emphasis on entertainment, Martin Brundle questioned the interpretation of the restart procedure, and former team principal Otmar Szafnauer argued that a red flag would have been a better option.
