British GP 2026: Russell on gap to Antonelli

News - 2026-07-15 - By Jenny Marsh

After Silverstone, reports said George Russell viewed his 25-point gap to Andrea Kimi Antonelli as fair on pace while still questioning Mercedes form.

After the British Grand Prix, Motorsport.com reported that George Russell viewed his 25-point deficit to Mercedes team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli as broadly in line with their performance level, while also questioning whether luck had fallen evenly across their campaigns. Russell left Silverstone second in the 2026 drivers’ championship on 154 points, with Antonelli leading on 179.

The same outlet also reported that Russell had kept confidence despite a difficult early stretch to the season. RaceFans added that Russell was still trying to understand Mercedes’ car after a weekend at Silverstone in which he lagged behind Antonelli. Russell, born on 15 February 1998, has seven Formula 1 wins from 161 starts, while Mercedes has 138 wins and eight constructors’ titles across 19 seasons.

Looking ahead to Spa-Francorchamps, Motorsport.com further reported that Russell reflected on his difficult memories of the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix before returning to the circuit. No sourced post-Silverstone reaction from Carlos Sainz was included in the supplied material, although the Spaniard sat 15th in the standings on six points.
