2026 Hungarian GP: Russell software issue reported
Autosport reported Mercedes was investigating a software issue behind George Russell’s slow Hungary start after an engine change left him seventh on the grid.
Mercedes was reported to be investigating a software issue linked to George Russell’s slow start at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix. Autosport reported the problem affected Russell’s car on the grid and said the revs went out of control before lights out.
The same outlet reported that a water leak after Russell hit a kerb on Saturday damaged his engine, which led Mercedes to fit a fresh V6 before the race. Autosport also said the change did not trigger a grid penalty, so Russell kept seventh on the grid.
BBC Sport separately reported that Russell had been managing a run of problems and described a serious straight-line issue as a major blow to his title fight with Kimi Antonelli. Russell arrived at the weekend third in the 2026 drivers’ championship on 160 points, while Mercedes is in its 19th Formula 1 season with 138 wins and eight titles.
