Max Verstappen won the Qatar Grand Prix 2024 from P2 on the grid, beating Charles Leclerc by 6.031s as he extended his drivers' standings lead.

Max Verstappen won the Qatar Grand Prix at Losail International Circuit on 1 December 2024, finishing 6.031 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc. The Red Bull driver started second and scored 25 points in round 23 of the 2024 season.

Race

Charles Leclerc took second for Ferrari from fifth on the grid, while Oscar Piastri finished third for McLaren after starting fourth. George Russell started from pole position for Mercedes but dropped to fourth at the flag, 14.104 seconds behind Verstappen.

Pierre Gasly delivered one of the biggest gains in the top 10, moving from 11th on the grid to fifth for Alpine F1 Team. Carlos Sainz finished sixth for Ferrari from seventh, Fernando Alonso took seventh for Aston Martin from eighth, and Guanyu Zhou climbed from 12th to eighth for Sauber.

Kevin Magnussen finished ninth for Haas F1 Team after lining up 10th, and Lando Norris completed the points in 10th for McLaren after starting third. Norris also set the fastest lap on lap 56 with a 1:22.384.

Championship standings

After the race, Verstappen led the drivers' championship with 429 points. Norris remained second on 349 points, and Leclerc sat third on 341.

Key movers

Gasly gained six places between the grid and the finish by converting 11th into fifth. Zhou also advanced four positions from 12th to eighth, while Russell lost three places from pole position to fourth and Norris fell seven spots from third to 10th.
