Italian GP 2026: Piastri gets three-place grid drop

Oscar Piastri took a three-place Italian Grand Prix grid penalty for impeding Liam Lawson in qualifying, dropping from third to sixth at Monza.

Oscar Piastri has been given a three-place grid penalty for the 2026 Italian Grand Prix after stewards found he impeded Liam Lawson in qualifying, according to Formula1.com. Autosport, Motorsport.com and RaceFans also reported the decision.

The penalty drops the McLaren driver from third to sixth on the grid at Monza. Autosport and Motorsport.com reported that Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen each move up one place as a result.

Piastri goes into the weekend seventh in the drivers' championship on 104 points. Lawson is ninth on 49 points, and the New Zealander has made 44 Formula 1 starts across three teams between 2023 and 2026.
