2026 Azerbaijan GP: Piastri on Baku error

News - 2026-09-27 - By Jenny Marsh

Formula1.com reported Oscar Piastri said his Baku lock-up caught him out, while other reports linked the error to a missed podium chance.

Formula1.com reported that Oscar Piastri said the lock-up in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix caught him out, after a race in which McLaren did not score. With the story unconfirmed beyond those reports, the incident is best framed as a reported setback rather than an established turning point.

Motorsport.com reported that Piastri was running third at the Baku City Circuit when he locked up while defending from Isack Hadjar on the main straight, and that Jacques Villeneuve later criticised it as a rookie error. Piastri, an Australian driver born on 6 April 2001, has raced for McLaren in Formula 1 since 2023 and stood seventh in the 2026 drivers' championship on 120 points.

Before the race, Motorsport.com had also reported that Piastri viewed third on the grid as a solid result after a difficult build-up in Baku. That context made the reported mistake more costly, with McLaren leaving Azerbaijan without a point according to Formula1.com.
