Italian GP 2026: Reported Piastri Penalty Shifts Grid

Autosport reported Oscar Piastri received a three-place Italian Grand Prix grid penalty at Monza, while Pierre Gasly took pole by 0.060s.

Autosport reported that Oscar Piastri was handed a three-place grid penalty for the Italian Grand Prix after impeding Liam Lawson in qualifying at Monza. If confirmed, the sanction would drop the McLaren driver from third to sixth on the grid and move Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen up one place each. Piastri arrived at the weekend seventh in the 2026 drivers' championship on 120 points, while Lawson was ninth on 59.

The same outlet reported that Pierre Gasly claimed pole position for Alpine by 0.060s over George Russell. Gasly went into the event 10th in the standings on 41 points, and the Frenchman has 187 Formula 1 entries and one grand prix win on his record.

Autosport also reported that Russell led final practice for Mercedes ahead of Hamilton, with Verstappen third and championship leader Kimi Antonelli fourth. Those sessions added context to a Monza grid that, according to the report, remained subject to official confirmation of Piastri's penalty.
