Mercedes, Russell assess Silverstone title pressure
Mercedes reviewed Silverstone with Andrea Kimi Antonelli leading George Russell 179-154, as reported reliability concerns and Ferrari pressure grew.
Mercedes left Silverstone with Andrea Kimi Antonelli still leading the 2026 drivers' championship on 179 points, 25 ahead of George Russell on 154. BBC Sport reported discussion around the Mercedes team-mates' title battle after the British Grand Prix, while the same outlet also reported Russell had described Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari as a major threat in this season's fight.
Russell, a seven-time Grand Prix winner from 161 Formula 1 starts, had arrived after pole position and victory in Austria, with BBC Sport reporting those results as a boost before Silverstone. At his home race, though, RaceFans reported Russell said he was still struggling to understand the Mercedes car, and Motorsport.com reported the team was investigating a top-speed issue that affected his qualifying pace.
Reliability also remained part of the picture. Formula1.com reported Mercedes and Antonelli were keen to respond after recent technical problems, and Motorsport.com reported Mercedes' reliability concerns had strengthened Ferrari's position in the championship fight. Ferrari's pressure after Silverstone was also reported by Motorsport.com through comments from Toto Wolff and Andrew Shovlin.
