Madrid to revise circuit after 2026 Spanish GP

News - 2026-09-23 - By Jenny Marsh

Madrid organisers plan circuit changes after criticism of the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix, with Autosport reporting FIA recommendations have already been received.

Madrid organisers plan changes to the new circuit used for the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix, BBC Sport reported after criticism of the venue’s first Formula 1 race. Autosport added that revisions to the 5.4km Madring layout around IFEMA are aimed at improving overtaking for 2027, and reported that FIA recommendations have already been received.

The reports did not detail which sections could change, but criticism of the race was a common theme. Motorsport.com reported that drivers, fans and pundits questioned the lack of passing opportunities, while David Coulthard said returning in 2027 without layout changes would be a mistake. The same outlet also reported former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner urged organisers to act quickly, while James Vowles backed Madrid’s longer-term potential despite the difficult debut. RaceFans also noted debate over whether the circuit or Formula 1’s 2026 rules were more responsible for the race.
