Ocon was 18th in the drivers' championship on three points at this stage of the season. The Frenchman had made 189 Formula 1 starts coming into 2026, with one win and four podiums, so an 11th-place finish reportedly left Haas just short of adding to his tally.

Haas entered Formula 1 in 2016 after the team was founded in 2014. Across 11 seasons from 2016 to 2026, the American team had yet to record a race win or a constructors' title, which adds context to another reported near-miss for points in Spain.
