FIA term-limit vote passes as F1 weighs 2031 plans

News - 2026-07-07

BBC Sport reported the FIA passed a presidency term-limit change, while other reports said F1 is discussing 2031 engine options and a race return deadline.

BBC Sport reported that the FIA approved a proposal to remove term limits for its president by a majority of more than 90%. The outlet also reported that this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix has been designated a heat-hazard race by the governing body.

On future rules, BBC Sport reported that Formula 1 is holding parallel talks over its engine direction, including whether V8 power units could return. Autosport and Motorsport.com separately reported that the FIA is considering a third-party engine supply for customer teams from 2031, linked to wider discussion about lower-cost engines, but no final regulation has been confirmed.

The calendar is also still under review. Autosport reported that Formula 1 wants a decision before the summer break on recovering one of the postponed Middle Eastern rounds, with Bahrain or Saudi Arabia still under consideration after both events were called off in March.
