Colapinto gets Bahrain grid drop after Baku crash

Franco Colapinto has received a five-place grid penalty for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia after causing a multi-car incident at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, according to Formula1.com. Autosport, Motorsport.com and RaceFans also reported the sanction. Those reports said the penalty followed the lap 36 restart at Baku, where Colapinto locked up and hit Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly, with Lando Norris also eliminated in the incident.
BBC Sport reported that Norris said Colapinto should be banned, while Autosport and Motorsport.com reported that Alpine executive Flavio Briatore criticised the move after the race. Colapinto, an Argentine driver with 36 Formula 1 starts and a best finish of sixth, was 12th in the 2026 drivers' championship on 27 points before the next round. Gasly was 10th on 41 points, while Norris sat fourth on 186.
