Silverstone tightens Mercedes' 2026 title fight
Silverstone left Mercedes' title fight under sharper focus, with George Russell still chasing car balance and Andrea Kimi Antonelli leading by 25 points.
Silverstone put Mercedes' intra-team title fight back into focus. Formula1.com reported that team principal Toto Wolff said George Russell was still not fully comfortable with the car after his British Grand Prix podium, while RaceFans reported Russell saying he was still struggling to understand the Mercedes package. BBC Sport also reported that Russell's Austrian Grand Prix win, his second of the 2026 season, had restored confidence after what Andrew Benson described as a mature drive.
The standings remain close at the front. Andrea Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers' championship on 179 points, with Russell second on 154 and Lewis Hamilton third on 147. BBC Sport's Chequered Flag podcast discussed Antonelli and Russell as Mercedes team-mates going head-to-head for the title, while Motorsport.com reported that Antonelli's Silverstone setback left his lead reduced to 25 points.
