2026 British GP: Leclerc wins amid late confusion

News - 2026-07-08 - By Jenny Marsh

Charles Leclerc won the 2026 British Grand Prix ahead of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton after a safety-car finish and post-race steward decisions.

Charles Leclerc won the 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, with BBC Sport, Autosport and RaceFans all reporting George Russell finished second and Lewis Hamilton third. Leclerc arrived fourth in the drivers' championship on 108 points, while Russell was second on 154 and Hamilton third on 147. BBC Sport also reported a four-day attendance record of 564,000.

BBC Sport, Autosport and RaceFans reported the race ended behind the safety car after Max Verstappen crashed at Stowe with six laps remaining. Autosport and RaceFans said the FIA later blamed a software error for confusion over a possible final green-flag lap, while maintaining the safety-car finish followed the regulations.

After the flag, Autosport and RaceFans reported Hamilton kept third after a yellow-flag investigation ended with a reprimand. Autosport also reported Kimi Antonelli received a five-second penalty and finished outside the points, while Autosport, Motorsport.com and RaceFans said Carlos Sainz was penalised for incorrectly unlapping himself during the late safety-car period.
