British GP 2026: Antonelli setback cuts lead
Reported British GP trouble left Andrea Kimi Antonelli without points at Silverstone, trimming the Mercedes driver’s 2026 title lead to 25 points.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli left the 2026 British Grand Prix without points after a reported five-second track-limits penalty and a technical problem at Silverstone. Motorsport.com reported that the Mercedes driver was running second and closing on Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc before a left-front issue hit his car, and also reported that Mercedes would not contest the penalty.
That result cut Antonelli’s lead in the drivers’ championship to 179 points. George Russell sits second on 154 and Lewis Hamilton is third on 147, leaving Antonelli 25 points clear of Russell and 32 ahead of Hamilton; across 33 Formula 1 entries, Antonelli has five wins, five poles and 10 podiums.
Further fallout remains at the level of reported reaction. Motorsport.com reported that Juan Pablo Montoya wants Formula 1 to revisit the track-limits rule after the penalty, while the same outlet separately reported that Hamilton expects both Mercedes drivers to take engine-related grid penalties later in the 2026 season, which has not been confirmed.
