Hungarian GP blue-flag malfunction explained

News - 2026-07-27 - By Jenny Marsh

Autosport and Motorsport.com reported a blue-flag system failure disrupted the Hungarian Grand Prix, while Toto Wolff criticised teams' response.

Autosport and Motorsport.com reported that a blue-flag system failure caused confusion during the Hungarian Grand Prix, with several drivers appearing to miss or ignore blue-flag warnings. Both outlets said the issue was a signalling malfunction rather than deliberate driver misconduct.

RaceFans reported that Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff criticised rival teams’ engineers for failing to react quickly when the delayed blue-flag information came through. Mercedes is one of Formula 1’s most successful constructors, with 138 wins and eight titles across 19 seasons.

BBC Sport separately reported a software error at the British Grand Prix that briefly created confusion over whether there would be one final racing lap after a late safety car. That was a different incident, but it added fresh attention to how technical systems are used to manage modern Formula 1 races.
