News - 2026-09-26 - By Jenny Marsh

Franco Colapinto’s restart crash in Baku put Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris out, brought a 10-second penalty and drew calls for a ban.

Franco Colapinto’s restart crash in Baku put both Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris out of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Formula1.com reported that Norris had been on course for points before the contact forced the McLaren driver to retire, while the same outlet said Alpine had been heading for a double points finish before Colapinto hit his team-mate and then collected Norris.

BBC Sport reported that Norris said Colapinto should be banned after the incident, while Autosport and Motorsport.com both reported that he argued for at least a one-race ban. Norris arrived in Baku fourth in the drivers’ championship on 186 points; Gasly was 10th on 41, and Colapinto 12th on 27.

RaceFans reported that Colapinto received a 10-second penalty for the collision. Motorsport.com also reported that Colapinto apologised to Gasly and Norris after the incident.
