News - 2026-07-08 - By Jenny Marsh

Austrian Grand Prix 2026 fallout centred on George Russell’s win over Max Verstappen, with BBC Sport also reporting debate around his pole lap.

BBC Sport reported that George Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix after holding off Max Verstappen. The result strengthened Russell’s position in the drivers' championship, where he came into the event second on 154 points, while Verstappen was seventh on 76. Russell, 28, also moved his Formula 1 career tally to 161 starts and seven wins.

Qualifying remained part of the post-race discussion. BBC Sport reported that Russell took pole position in controversial circumstances after beating Charles Leclerc with the final lap of the session, and later examined whether the episode could set a difficult precedent. Leclerc had arrived at the race fourth in the standings on 108 points.

Autosport also reported that Russell said he used an unusual driving approach to manage his Mercedes on the way to victory. Mercedes' win added to the constructor’s long-term record in Formula 1, where it has 138 victories across 19 seasons.
