Audi 2026 engine debate meets 2030 title target
Reports from Autosport and Motorsport.com link Audi’s push on F1 engine rules with Mattia Binotto’s stated target of fighting for titles by 2030.
Audi is reported to be pressing for changes around Formula 1’s 2026 power-unit framework while also setting a longer-term target for results. Autosport and Motorsport.com reported that Mattia Binotto wants Audi to fight for the championship by 2030. In 2026, the team that replaced Sauber is ninth in the constructors' championship after nine rounds with six points, all scored by Gabriel Bortoleto.
Those outlets also reported that Binotto wants the FIA to revisit the ADUO upgrade system after Mercedes was allowed additional scope for power-unit upgrades. According to the same reports, the Mercedes engine is regarded as the strongest under the 2026 rules and has powered seven wins in the first nine races. Mercedes has 138 wins and eight titles across 19 Formula 1 seasons.
Motorsport.com further reported that Audi sees efficiency as a key part of the next engine formula as talks begin over the 2031 regulations. Autosport also reported that the FIA is considering alternatives to the current customer-engine model from 2031, although no change has been confirmed.
