Alonso 2027 future queried after Newey remarks

News - 2026-08-01 - By Jenny Marsh

Formula1.com, BBC Sport and Autosport reports have kept Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin future in view as the team evaluates its 2026 upgrade path.

Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin future beyond 2026 remains unconfirmed. Formula1.com reported that Adrian Newey had discussed whether Aston Martin could keep Alonso into 2027, while BBC Sport reported that Alonso was optimistic about the team’s major upgrade introduced for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Autosport reported that Alonso called his Hungary qualifying result an important lift after his first Q2 appearance in grand prix qualifying of the 2026 season. A separate Autosport report said Aston Martin was encouraged by the early showing of the revised AMR26, and another said Newey viewed the Hungarian package as only the first part of the car’s development.

Alonso, born on 29 July 1981, is a two-time world champion with 432 Formula 1 starts and 32 wins. He is 19th in the 2026 drivers’ championship on one point, while Aston Martin is still chasing its first Formula 1 race win and constructors’ title.
