2026 British GP: Antonelli pole to penalty fallout
Andrea Kimi Antonelli took British GP pole and won the Silverstone sprint, before a reported track-limits penalty added another twist to Mercedes' title fight.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s Silverstone weekend split sharply between qualifying pace and race frustration. BBC Sport and RaceFans reported that the Mercedes driver took pole position for the 2026 British Grand Prix ahead of Charles Leclerc, with George Russell fourth, while BBC Sport and RaceFans also reported that Antonelli passed Lewis Hamilton to win the sprint. Autosport reported that it was Antonelli’s fifth pole of the 2026 season. He arrived at the event leading the drivers’ championship on 179 points, with Russell second on 154 and Hamilton third on 147.
Motorsport.com reported that Antonelli received a five-second track-limits penalty during the British Grand Prix and that Mercedes would not contest it. BBC Sport also reported that the fight between Antonelli and Russell had become a major theme in Mercedes’ push for the drivers’ title. Antonelli, 19, now has 33 Formula 1 starts with five wins, five poles and 10 podiums, while Mercedes’ record stands at 138 wins and eight constructors’ titles.
